EUROVISION SONG CONTEST 2014 - UK ENTRY

For the past few years the United Kingdom has failed miserably to perform well at the Eurovision Song Contest Finals.
The UK has finished at the bottom end of the table in spite of some brilliant renderings from the performing artists. . It is tempting to blame the selection panel for choosing such losing songs.

I think that it time to make a drastic change in approach. Instead of selecting loud, bouncy, boom boom numbers - because this is what Eurovision wants - we should remember that Ireland won Eurovision many times with  Ballads. Yes, it is time for a Ballad - melodic, romantic, wonderful to listen to over and over again.
A potential Number 1 Chart Hit - and Winner of Eurovision 2014.

I have that song. I composed the music and wrote the lyrics. The song is called EVERYTIME.
The musical arrangement was made by Richard Niles in his Los Angeles studio in 2013.
Richard Niles has had 40 world hits for artists such as -
Kylie Minogue
Tina Turner
Grace Jones
Mariah C\arey
Cher
Per Shop Boys
Paul McCartnet
and many more.

Richard Niles said - Your song is lovely and we have made it beautiful

Helen Gammons, Programme Director of the MBA Degree Course for The Music &; Creative Industries said - Everytime is a wonderful song.

Eurovision Song Contest 2014 - GO FOR IT - EVERYTIME.

THE NOREPLY CULTURE IN THE 21ST CENTURY - THE UNREACHABLES

THE UNREACHABLES

Do you remember the days when you would receive a polite acknowledgement of your letter from Companies and Public Bodies ? I do.
When I was Chief Executive in leading British and French Companies, I would always acknowledge letters because I thought that it was the polite and right thing to do. Of course this was in the days of the Secretary before the Computer Revolution when you can write the letters yourself !
However, there is no excuse for ignorant impolite lack of manners attitudes from today's NOREPLY CULTURE
This dismissive behavior in all quarters of our society should be held in the contempt that they deserve.
If you are a budding musician, singer or composer and you write to any of the leading music Publishers. the chances are that they will ignore your letter - and bin your Demo CD.
If you send a web email to a Celebrity, guess what - you will not get a reply.
Do not count on getting a reply from a Government Agency - you may be lucky and get a reply in 6 months.

Perhaps you can try one of the automated telephone services.  Often a voice will say - we are very busy at the moment, try later - and cut you off. HM Inland Revenue are top of the league for doing this - but BT are not far behind in their disrespect for you the customer.

Do you ever try to write a book ? You spend many weeks writing and then send it  to either a Literary
Agent or direct to a Publisher. Do not hold your breath - the chances are they will not reply or you will get the usual brush off - we have too many books on our list at present. This means - they cannot be bothered to even read your book.
Perhaps you have written an interesting article about key issues in current affairs ? You may send it to a magazine or a newspaper. You expect a reply ? Forget it. Most never reply and they treat you with contempt.

Have you ever been Job Hunting ? If you have ever written  a  speculative letter with CV to companies the chances are that about 90% of the companies will ignore you and will not be bothered to reply. If you write to be a candidate for a specific advertised job, you will find that if you do not get a reply within 2 weeks, in 90% of the cases you will get no reply at all.  Good manners and politeness seem to have been abandoned by the Noreply Culture of today's world.

Yes - we live in the NOREPLY Society where Noreply is the norm.

Is it not time for our Society to be more polite and give talent more of a chance and not just concentrate on the so called Celebrities ? Surely, a polite response - and after careful evaluation - can be given to the person who has taken the trouble to write to them in the first place with a proposition ?
Bring back good manners and inter personal skills I say.

HIGH SPEED RAIL PROJECT - HS2 - ANOTHER WHITE ELEPHANT

The proposed High Speed Rail link between London and Birmingham in phase 1 at an estimated cost of over £50,000,000,000 - yes - 50 Billion Pounds and rising is the biggest White Elephant since the Labour Government Ground Nuts Scheme in Nigeria many years ago. The HS2 scheme is a complete waste of Public Money. Remember how the London Olympic Games was budgeted at £2.5 Billions and ended up £9 Billions ?  Do you remember how everyone in the Establishment proudly boasted - We kept the Games within budget ! How can we trust the Civil Service with their phony Budgets ? How many large scale budgets have they got wrong ? Many I fear.  Have they allowed for inflation?  Has the Treasury made a NPV - Net Present Value Financial Analysis ? Have they taken into consideration advances in Travel Technology and its impact on costings ? Have they balanced large city economic and employment needs versus smaller towns economic need in the UK ?  Has the Government invited a leading Business School - such as Henley Business School - to make an independent evaluation of the cost benefits of HS2 and alternative priority options for an investment of some £50 Billions in the UK economy ?

To save about 20 minutes on the journey between Birmingham and London will make no difference to the business  traveller because any saving on the railway will be lost once they reach London. The London traffic is getting worse rather than better in spite of the Congestion Charge. In any case most business travellers like to work, read  or sleep on the train. The time gained argument is very weak indeed.
As a result, the argument that HS2 will increase business between London and Birmingham is false. It will make no difference at all.

The supporters will argue that there is a Capacity Problem developing now and in the future decades.
This may be true but capacity can be increased in many ways.

  • Technological advances in Communications will mean that it will be not be needed to make long distance journeys for the business traveller.Video communications are already commonplace and the slimline TV technology and SpaceSat Communications will accelerate non travel communications in the future. Capacity can also be increased by -
  • Introducing Double Decker carriages like in the USA, Japan, Holland and other countries.
  • Adding extra carriages to existing trains
  • Revising timetables to increase the frequency of travel between Birmingham and London.
  • Considering the cost alternative of Monorail Links over existing rail tracks
  • Expand luxury fast Executive coach travel between the two cities
  • Increasing frequency of rail travel on alternative routes via High Wycombe to Birmingham.
There is also a Regional Expansion consideration. It may be better to invest more in the infrastructure of smaller cities and towns to promote employment and prosperity. The new towns such as Milton Keynes have proven that investment in the outer regions can bring sound economic benefits. These suburban towns have already good communications links with London, Birmingham, Manchester, Leeds ,Glasgow for example. Why not develop these rail and road links ? Why not improve local communications ? This could bring more economic benefits than a faster rail link between London and Birmingham. Why not have a mini-reversal of the Beecham Plan ? Local conurbations need better rail and road travel ! Surburban links to London need more investment - note the overcrowding on existing routes.

Consequently, the business case and capacity arguments fail in my view. There are more pressing options -  £50 Billion could build and equip many new hospitals and increase the capacity of the NHS - a more key issue and of more benefit to Society as a whole. School repairs and additional school places capacity is another more deserving priority. Also - what about a £50 Billions spend for Care for the Elderly?
Surely, investment in these areas would bring long lasting economic and social benefits to the United Kingdom.
Readers will have noted that I have not used the arguments that HS2 will do damage to the Environment, Property and Peoples lives. However - if there is need of any further proof that HS2 is a White Elephant .
I support the arguments that HS2 will have a devastating impact on the people who live along the proposed route. It will also have a negative impact on the environment.

Finally, everyone will agree that one of the key drivers of Growth in the Economy is the Speedy economical movement of goods and freight. The UK needs investment in the infrastructure to improve freight movement for the Domestic Market and the International Markets. The HS2 Project does nothing to improve Fright movement cost effectiveness.

I am amazed that so many Civil Servants and Politicians can be so stupid to support this HS2 folly.
I am an ordinary citizen. I do not live along the HS2 route. I just feel strongly that we ordinary citizens must make our voices known - and help to stop the madness of HS2 before it is too late.

MUSIC COMPOSITION AS A HOBBY

MUSIC COMPOSITION AS A HOBBY

Since the age of 16. I have always been interested in trying to compose music. In my early days, I composed a musical which I called Maytime. I sent one of my songs Everywhere that you are to the famous band leader Geraldo. He replied thanking me but said the song was not quite up to professional standard. I suppose that this reply inspired me not to give up and to try again.
In my retirement years, as a hobby, I have become more professional. In 2013, due to a personal contact which I had at Henley Business School. I had an introduction to Richard Niles in Los Angeles who is one one of the World's most famous music arrangers. You have probably never heard of him !
Richard Niles has had 40 World Hits arranging these hits for Kylie Minogue ( the song Locomotion from her recent Show Girl Tour ) , Mariah Carey, Tina Turner, Paul McCartney, Pet Shop Boys, Grace Jones and many more. He has a studio in Hollywood Los Angeles California.
I contacted Richard Niles and for a fee, he did a modern arrangement of my ballad Everytime.
He said that The song is lovely and I think the arrangement is beautiful. I am very pleased with the outcome.
In 2013, I have also composed a classical Concerto – The Wild Flowers Concerto – A Tribute to the Wild Flowers of London Olympic Park. Our 50 Plus Club John Finnemore made the video and with his help – which I appreciate very much – I placed the Concerto on YouTube, So far this year 21,200 people have viewed the Video sample – 3 minutes. The full Concerto is 9 minutes 30 seconds and can be downloaded online from iTunes, Amazon, Virgin Megastores, Google Play, Spotify.
In order to help fellow budding composers, I have written a 17 pages article – The Online Music Revolution 2013. It can be viewed on my Blog – www.eurekys.blogspot.co.uk Scroll down to the article.
My song Cry Over You has been played 7,200 times on Global Radio stations in 2013. It won an Honour Award in the Great American Song Contest – coming Number 6 out of 660 entrants.
My Musical Ria Conchita contains 13 songs. It was a Semi- Finalist in the British New Musical Awards.. The National Operatic and Dramatic Association gave the Musical a full page write up in their National Magazine.
Am I making loads of money from my musical hobby ? No. Breaking into the Music Industry is like breaking into Fort Knox Gold Cellars ! If you are already famous, it can be easy. If you win X Factor on Television or you are runner-up like The One Direction Boy Band, it is easy to launch new songs.
Most of the time, a Record Producer will not even reply to your submission.
However, is money the only measurement of success in life ? I think not.
I gain a lot of pleasure from my compositions and I hope to continue composing for the rest of my days.

ONLINE DIGITAL MUSIC

If you are a budding Composer or Singer of Music - visit www.eurekys.blogspot.co.uk and see my articles -

THE ONLINE MUSIC REVOLUTION IN THE 21ST CENTURY

CHASING YOUR DREAMS IN THE TRADITIONAL MUSIC PUBLISHING INDUSTRY

It might help you considerably to succeed.

CHASING YOUR DREAM IN THE TRADITIONAL MUSIC PUBLISHING INDUSTRY

CHASING DREAMS IN THE TRADITIONAL MUSIC INDUSTRY

Probably the best advice that I can give to a budding talented.Composer of music - be their genre Classical or Pop is this -
DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME AND EFFORT on trying to break into the Traditional Music Publishing Industry.

WHY ?

The traditional Music Publishing Industry is like trying to break into  Fort Knox Bullion  Gold storage in the USA  Impossible.
If you research the Music Publishers Association List of Members, you will note that 95% of the its Members state - Unsolicited songs not accepted. They will dump your Demo recordings into the nearest bin. They will not even provide you with a polite letter of rejection. They receive so many offers that they are now arrogant, impolite and oblivious to new talent and the hopes of so many people.
How do you get solicited ? Heaven knows ! Forget them. Do not waste your time on them. Perhaps one day, they will need new talent.

If you contact all the leading Music Publishers - I have done so in the UK and the USA - you will not get a reply. They cannot be bothered to consider new talent except from leading existing stars and winners of the X Factor ! So, I am afraid that you will banging your head against a brick wall.

You may decide to join BASCA - The British Academy of Songwriters and Composers. BASCA is very good at offering Workshops and advice and guidance. They are useful for informing the budding composer about Competitions and high profile functions and lots of help on contracts and legal matters. However, I have found BASCA not forthcoming with introductions to people who could consider or listen to your new compositions. So, do not count on BASCA to open doors for you..

Another route that is unlikely to bear fruit is to contact the Agents of leading artists in the Music Industry.
You will be wasting your time. They are like the R & B departments of the major Music Publishers - so inundated with talent, that they can be ruthless in their attitude of contempt to new talent.

Most of the leading artists today in 2013 have websites where you can post a message. They also use the social sites such as Twitter, Facebook, Google and others. I have found that I never get a reply from any of these routes. A waste of time.

You may decide that the best route to promote  your music is to send your CDs to all the major Radio Stations. Wrong.  You will enter the world of catch 22 - most will only play music which is available in music retailers - the traditional shops ( which are. in decline.)  Even if your music is available from all the online distribution sites such as - iTunes, Amazon, Virgin Megastores, Google Play, Spotify and others, they will not play your music. The online music sites are expanding at a rapid rate !

So, with all this doom and gloom, how can you succeed in the Music Industry ?
The answer is - Concentrate your resources on the Online Digital Music Distribution and Promotion sites.
Give the Traditional Routes a big miss.

For guidance on how to use Online Marketing Techniques, see my article -

THE ONLINE MUSIC REVOLUTION IN THE 21ST CENTURY.
